A Catalogue of Catastrophe: Chronicles of St Mary’s, Book 13

 – Jodi Taylor (AUDIOBOOK) – 03.05.22 I have tried a couple of other time travel books recently, which have only gone to remind me that nobody does it as well as Jodi Taylor! Max jumping through time to stop the bad guys and save the world – with humour and irreverent fun. What more doContinue reading A Catalogue of Catastrophe: Chronicles of St Mary’s, Book 13

The Mermaid of Black Conch Bay – Monique Roffey – 01.05.22 (BOOKGROUP)

This was my book group read for May, and Sheila (our leader) had just completed a course at Queen’s University on Women Writers, which covered this book so she was able to share some nuggets of inspiration about the many layers of meaning to this magical realism fable. Set on a Caribbean Island, the storyContinue reading “The Mermaid of Black Conch Bay – Monique Roffey – 01.05.22 (BOOKGROUP)”

The Comfort Book – Matt Haig –(AUDIOBOOK) – 25.04.22

I love Matt Haig, so much that I actually read his self-help type books even thought I hate self-help books usually. I listened to this on the way to my second physiotherapy appointment for my back pain. Since my Covid confinement, I’ve had a really bad back, which my GP thinks is due to aContinue reading “The Comfort Book – Matt Haig –(AUDIOBOOK) – 25.04.22”

Amongst Our Weapons (Rivers of London Book ) – Ben Aaronovitch – (AUDIOBOOK) – 24.04.22

I really enjoyed this new instalment of the Rivers of London series – lots of fondly humorous nods to classic fantasy like Tolkien and Harry Potter with magic rings of power and WWII ghosts and the excitement of Peter’s partner Bev’s pregnancy and the birth of the twins. Can’t wait for the next one!

The Broken Cage (Crow Investigations Book 7)

– Sarah Painter – 22.03.22 I was excited for this latest installment in the Crow Investigations series which I had preordered and I really enjoyed it. I know some people on Amazon where complaining about the cliff hanger ending, but I didn’t mind that – it just makes me excited for the next book. IContinue reading The Broken Cage (Crow Investigations Book 7)

A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians (Audiobook) –

H. G. Parry (Author), Andrew Kingston (Narrator) –16.03.22 I loved The Unlikely Adventures of Uriah Heep so much that I bought this second novel by H. G. Perry as an audiobook and couldn’t wait to start listening. Well, all I can say is that that is 21 hours of my life I’ll never get back!Continue reading A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians (Audiobook) –

Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead – Emily Austin – 03.03.22

I really liked this quirky original book. The main character, Gilda, is an Atheist lesbian with OCD and depression. When trying to attend a workshop on mental health, she is mistaken for a job applicant and ends up working for the Catholic Church. The book has lots of heart and humour while dealing with deepContinue reading “Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead – Emily Austin – 03.03.22”

Dreadful Company: A Dr Greta Helsing Novel – 01.08.21 Grave Importance: A Dr Greta Helsing Novel – Vivian Shaw – 04.08.21

I love the character of Dr Greta Helsing – physician to the magical/supernatural beings that live among us. Dreadful company is mostly about vampires. Some of Greta’s best friends are vampires, and she knows well their struggles and battles to live as (literally) bloodthirsty immortals but still retain their honour and dignity and do asContinue reading “Dreadful Company: A Dr Greta Helsing Novel – 01.08.21 Grave Importance: A Dr Greta Helsing Novel – Vivian Shaw – 04.08.21”
