I love Claire North’s writing – I always find myself drawn into her novels and connecting with the characters. While ‘space opera’ or big universe sci-fi stuff like this is not normally my thing these days, of course I still read it because it’s by Claire North and of course I was gripped and enjoyed it very much (slightly annoyed by all the different pronouns, although I get why, and that’s fine, it’s just a bit hard to parse them in my head as I read – I remember being annoyed by a narrator of an audiobook which used various non gender of non biological life pronouns because they always kind of paused before saying them as if they were in inverted commas, but reading this book I found myself doing that in my head, taking a beat to use the unfamiliar terms, so I have to forgive the narrator whom I judged harshly!
I read it while staying with my daughter around the time of the birth of her second child and I raved so much that she went on to buy and read several books from Claire North’s back catalogue.
